TELOK MELANO

Telok Melano derived its name from a tree called ‘No’ that used to grow in the area, while Telok means ‘bay’. Kampung Telok Melano is a quaint and traditional fishing village that sits in one of the most beautiful bays in the area of Sematan.

As for the villagers, they plant cash crops like pepper, rubber, cocoa and coconut as a living. There are few small isolated bays and beaches a short walk away. Beyond the farms of the kampong folks lies the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan. Some of the locals here have relatives across the border and they often get together and share light moments. One can also trek from the village to Tanjung Datu National Park or even all the way to Sematan. Another option is to go inland along well-worn paths which lead to small farms and vegetable gardens.

SEMATAN

To the kampung folks of Telok Melano as well as visitors from the city, they would normally go to the nearest town - Sematan, a small fishing town which is usually used as a base for anglers to go sea fishing. The town offers natural and unspoilt beach that seems to stretch on forever. The journey to Sematan now takes an hour and half and it offers an accessible and easy weekend retreat for the city folks.

The town consists of rows of old shophouses, a jetty and a rather busy timber dock. A variety of food stalls can be found here selling mostly Malay food. Locals just love to hang out at the stalls sipping coffee and watch the days go by. Cosy small chalets have sprung up to cater for the increase in tourists to the area. One of the better ones is the Sematan Palm Beach Resort which opened in 2004.

There are beach front and dorm rooms as well. Clean and quiet, the resort allows day trippers in for an entry fee of only RM2. The beach front is dotted with coconut trees which thoughtfully caution visitors of falling coconuts.

They have also other recreational facilities like kayak and bicycle rental, wall climbing, diving and snorkelling. The boat fare for the Sematan-Telok Melano trip is RM10. Visitors can also choose to stay at other accommodations like the Pueh Camp, Sematan Resort and Holiday Chalet Sematan.

Sematan is a small town where everyone knows each other and it is easy enough to get around. There are other attractions in Sematan that you can visit as well; the Crab Farm and Silk Farm. The former is located at Kampung Trusan Jaya which is about 30km from Lundu Town and 120km from Kuching, while the Silk Farm is located 110km from the city. Over 50 hectares of the farm have been planted with mulberry plants and another 20 hectares housed the production buildings, office staff and workers’ quarters.
