To the kampung folks of Telok Melano as well as visitors from the city, they would normally go to the nearest town - Sematan, a small fishing town which is usually used as a base for anglers to go sea fishing. The town offers natural and unspoilt beach that seems to stretch on forever. The journey to Sematan now takes an hour and half and it offers an accessible and easy weekend retreat for the city folks. The town consists of rows of old shophouses, a jetty and a rather busy timber dock. A variety of food stalls can be found here selling mostly Malay food. Locals just love to hang out at the stalls sipping coffee and watch the days go by. Cosy small chalets have sprung up to cater for the increase in tourists to the area. One of the better ones is the Sematan Palm Beach Resort which opened in 2004. There are beach front and dorm rooms as well. Clean and quiet, the resort allows day trippers in for an entry fee of only RM2. The beach front is dotted with coconut trees which thoughtfully caution visitors of falling coconuts. |
